The Solenoid Valve Operates a Pneumatic Actuator

Last time, we heard how a solenoid valve works to create different compressed air stream paths during passageways within its valve body. These distinct air leak paths have been created by opening and closing an electrical switch to de-energize and energize a solenoid mounted on the valve body.

With the solenoid valve's electrical switch opened, the valve spool is pushed upward inside the valve body with a spring to create airflow paths between Ports E and A and Ports D and B. If compressed air is fed to Port A and the left side of this pneumatic actuator's cylinder is directly connected to Port E, then the air pressure goes the actuator's piston to the right side. But, for the actuator piston to move freely to the proper, the ideal side of this cylinder is attached to Port D in the valve body. As the piston moves into the right, it forces air out of the right side of the tube, via Port D, through the valve body, and out through Port B has been vented to the atmosphere.

The De-energized Solenoid Valve Operates a Pneumatic Actuator

Together with all the solenoid valve's electric switches closed, the spool is pushed down in the valve body by the solenoid, to make air circulation paths between Ports A and D and Ports E and C. If compressed air is fed into Port A and the perfect side of the pneumatic actuator's cylinder is directly connected to Port D. Then the air pressure moves the actuator's piston to your left side. However, for your actuator piston to move to the left, the left side of this cylinder is attached to Port E. Because the piston moves left, the air is forced from the left side of the cylinder through Port E, also vented into the air through Port C.

Thus, in review, opening the solenoid valve's electric switch induces the pneumatic actuator piston to proceed right. Closing the switch causes the piston to move left. But there's an issue with this installment. Operating an electric switch my hands to deposit filling thousands of pastries can get tiring after a while. Next time, we will see how the valve's solenoid could be automatically turned off and on by an industrial management system.
